National Crime Victims’ Rights Week offers us all the opportunity to promote strength in unity in helping victims and survivors of crime and in recognizing their rights as crime victims.  During this week, organizations that assist crime victims in the 9th Judicial District (Garfield, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco counties) join together to promote greater public awareness of the rights and needs of crime victims.  The week’s theme, “Victims’ Rights: Every Victim. Every Year,” envisions a strengthened national commitment to the nearly 24 million Americans harmed by crime each year.

The 9th Judicial District Crime Victim Compensation Program is offered through the Victim/ Witness Assistance Program of the Office of the District Attorney.  It offers financial assistance to victims of crime for crime-related expenses such as unpaid medical bills, mental health counseling, funeral costs and lost wages.  In 2006, $353,133.17 was distributed to more than 300 victims and their families in Garfield, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco counties.  The program assists victims of assault, domestic violence, child sexual assault, sexual assault – rape, vehicular homicide, and survivors of homicide victims and other crimes.  The Crime Victim Compensation Program is funded by moneys paid by individuals convicted of crimes in Garfield, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties.
