Glenwood Springs Police Department has received reports over the last several weeks of citizens receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be IRS Agents. The callers advise that particular family members have warrants for their arrest, and convince the victims to send money. There are multiple variations the callers use as to why the victim needs to pay money.
These phone scammers typically have victims purchase Green Dot cards. Once the victims provide the scammers with the code off the back of the Green Dot cards, the scammers instantly have access to the money.
The GSPD would like to remind everyone that law enforcement officials will never call and ask that fines be paid over the phone.
Green Dot cards are reloadable prepaid debit cards that can be purchased at convenience stores and grocery stores.
