Glenwood Springs Police Department has recently taken many reports of citizens receiving a variety scam phone calls including:
- Individuals claiming to be law enforcement personnel, including officers or deputies at neighboring agencies
- Individuals or agencies claiming you missed jury duty
- Individuals or agencies, including the IRS, claiming you or a family member have a warrant
- Individuals or agencies requesting gift cards as a form of payment
The callers advise of various situations, like those listed above, and convince the victims to send money. In the past, these phone scammers have victims purchase Green Dot cards or ITunes gift cards. Once the victims provide the scammers with the code off the back of the cards, the scammers instantly have access to the money.
The GSPD would like to remind everyone that law enforcement officials will never call and ask that fines be paid over the phone. However, if you do fall victim to a scam phone call by sending money, report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.
